Description

Kūkupa, the native New Zealand wood pigeon, are a taonga of Te Roroa. In times of abundance they were highly prized, both as a source of kai (food) and for cultural material (feathers). However, large scale declining populations primarily driven by predation from exotic pests has impacted traditional harvest practices of kūkupa.

Kūkupa are highly mobile forest birds with large home ranges, however the true extent of their movements around the landscape are not well known. Te Roroa and the Department of Conservation (DoC) will work collaboratively in this project to provide data and information on kūkupa movements and habitat use across Te Taitokerau. Te Roroa acknowledges shared interests with other iwi/ hapu of Te Taitokerau, and will work with groups who are keen to be connected with this project.

Te Roroa encourages positive relationships and seeks to develop research partnerships and collaborations with a shared desire to enhance the health and well-being of our natural landscapes. The application of Local Contexts labels with partner agencies, institutions, and individuals is a recognition of positive intent from all parties.
