This Local Contexts project encompasses the objects housed in New Zealand Fungarium (PDD) Te Kohinga Hekaheka o Aotearoa. The Fungarium is the world's foremost collection of New Zealand fungi, and is one of the few sizeable collections of fungi in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the primary source of information on the fungi of New Zealand and Pacific nations.
The collection is housed at Manaaki Whenua in Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland. It contains all the major groups of fungi, with emphasis on the plant pathogenic microfungi and wood decay fungi. Indigenous fungi are well represented, and approximately 1400 type specimens of New Zealand fungi are held. Objects collected during surveys of plant diseases in the South Pacific are deposited in this collection. The primary data associated are digitised to improve the accessibility of these records. Through the addition of new objects and the digitisation of historic collections, the data made digitally accessible is increasing. In addition, the data are also being updated through scientific research (e.g., as specified are re-identified) and curatorial activity on the data and objects.
