This Local Contexts project encompasses the objects housed in New Zealand Arthropod Collection (NZAC) - Ko te Aitanga Pepeke o Aotearoa.
NZAC has the most complete coverage of terrestrial invertebrates in New Zealand. There are about 6.5 million specimens, with >1 million pinned. There are about 2600 primary type specimens. Most specimens are from the New Zealand subregion (about 6 million specimens) and neighbouring Pacific Island Countries (0.5 million). The collection is housed at Manaaki Whenua in Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland.
The objects are being digitised to improve the accessibility of these records. Through the addition of new objects and the digitisation of historic collections, the data made digitally accessible is increasing. In addition, the data are also being updated through scientific research (e.g., as specified are re-identified) and curatorial activity on the data and objects.
