Aotearoa New Zealand's freshwater sponges are largely under-investigated. Here, alongside Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki, we investigated the taxonomy and eDNA context of Aotearoa's freshwater sponges, and note in particular a putatively novel species Ephydatia hakapupuensis.
