Description

Whakatohea signed a deed of settlement on 1 October 1996 for claims stemming from the confiscation of tribal lands around Opotiki in the 1860s. Mr Tuhiakia Keepa (centre foreground), Mrs Mere Walker (right of centre, with kete) and other members of Whakatohea iwi at Parliament to witness the signing of a deed of settlement for land claims, photographed on 1 October 1996 by Evening Post staff photographer Craig Simcox.
