The goals of this project include (1) understanding what arthropod communities exist along a crop diversification gradient on Hawaiʻi Island and (2) identifying the barriers farmers and Kānaka ʻŌiwi community members face in farming. To address the first goal, we are collecting whole communities of arthropods from farms along the diversification gradient and identifying them through Next Generation Sequencing technology. To address the second goal, we are interviewing farmers and community members to learn about their individual stories, trials, and recommendations for a better local food system.
